Beauty Blogging Tips For Beginners | secondblonde

IMG_4272

FIND YOUR NICHE What is it about beauty that you you love, find your niche maybe you enjoy painting your nails and have beautiful hands-you can focus on hand/nails. Or perhaps you are passionate about skincare. I’m not saying you can only blog about one type of product,  I’m saying find your own niche so your blog can be truly you.

STYLE & IMAGERY Try to stand out! it’s ok to be inspired by other blogger’s but don’t be tempted to copy anyone. You must stay true to you, start thinking about the theme of your blog layout and the style of photo’s you will take. You can use backdrops and props but keep it simple and in keeping with your personality and why you have chosen to start blogging, then it will be unique to you.

READERS Think about who will read your blog, try to make your content specific to your audience. You may be blogging about beauty in your teens so therefore will need to write in a style that is appealing to that age group.

COMMITMENT Be prepared to put aside a lot of your spare time, blogging looks easy and very glamorous, the truth is it takes up a lot of time, passion and commitment – it’s almost like having a second part-time unpaid job!

FOLLOWERS This surely doesn’t happen overnight, trust me I’ve been blogging for 5 years years. Make sure you are in it for the long haul, after you put in the effort you will see your followers and post hits grow.

FREE STUFF If you start a blog as you think lot’s of companies or PR agency’s will contact you and send you FREE beauty products then think again! If this is the reason you are starting a blog then don’t bother. Your blog will never have the passion and therefore will not have your personality/tone of voice and not be unique.

DOMAINE NAME As a start-up theres no reason for you to spend any money, you can host your blog for free on platforms like blogger or wordpress. I started with blogger and moved to wordpress a few years later. I didn’t invest in my domaine name secondblonde.com until last year, previously I was secondblonde.wordpress.com it was kind of a milestone present to myself. I also felt ready to step it up a little and start promoting myself without feeling shy about it.

EQUIPMENT You don’t need anything fancy, I still use an iphone to take my photo’s and just started doing videos on my iphone for my new YouTube Channel subscribe here I also rely on natural daylight for my images and videos. It does determine when I can shoot however it’s the cheapest and easiest option.

HOW OFTEN SHALL I POST There’s no wrong or right answer here. It will depend on what free time you have around your job/family life etc My only advice is to keep it consistent for example if you blog once a week then stick to it, even better if you can choose the same day of the week for it to go out. Your readers will get into a pattern and check back to see what’s new. When it becomes irregular they stop bothering to come back. *TIP schedule your blog posts in advance (you can choose the date and time it goes out) if you know you will be too busy on the day they normally go out.

MONETISE YOUR BLOG There are lot’s of ways to monetise your blog like using paid adverts or being an affiliate and earning commission if someone purchases a product via your link. I suggest you don’t worry about these things yet as they only accept applicants that meet their stats requirements like number of followers/traffic etc I’m only starting to explore these avenues now and have yet to make my first penny!

NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK This should be an obvious one, make sure you are active on social media. I use Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. It’s advisable that you have the same name on your platforms so you are easy to find and with the same themes/logos/profile pics etc Don’t be shy to promote yourself on all of these platforms, after all if you don’t shout out about it then how will anyone read your posts! Starting off sharing it with family/friends is a good way to gain confidence and give you a boost when they have positive feedback – also they will be really honest which is always a good thing.

THERE YOU GO! GET OUT THERE, GET INSPIRED AND GET BLOGGING….

I hope you have found his post useful, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask. You can also leave your links in the comments below, I always love to see new talent.

Good Luck

Review: Rimmel london, Brow This Way! (brow sculpting kit)

IMG_1351

I’ve noticed lately that there are lot’s of brow kits available on the high street within budget beauty brands. Having been a loyal fan of Benefit’s brow kits for years and  more recently trying out Barry M’s version, I decided to test Rimmel’s “cheap as chips” offering.

The Promise : Sculpt the perfect photo-ready, high impact brow! Long lasting formula feels lightweight and comfortable all day long, 2 easy steps – apply wax to shape & fix, then layer powder to set.

IMG_1348

I alway’s opt for a dark brown as although my hair is coloured blonde my eyebrows are naturally dark, it is available in a medium brown shade too.

The wax is a good texture and easy to apply (other budget brands have a hard wax making it very difficult to use) The colour of the wax and powder are a perfect match. My brows look defined and it stay’s put for a whole day even through a busy shift at work, I do tend to do a little touch up at lunchtime but that’s just me! I’m really happy with the quality of the wax and powder considering it’s only £3.99

The brush is ok, the slanted end is great for creating a shape and definition with. The longevity of the brush is what I’m not that happy with. Unfortunately it loses it’s shape once you get about half way through the product, it’s bristles start sticking out like an old toothbrush which becomes impossible to create fine natural strokes.

IMG_1350

My Verdict: All in all I’m really happy with this product for the price point, I’m still using it daily so that say’s a lot! I would consider purchasing this again however, I just wish you can buy additional brushes, pretty please Rimmel London??

Have you tried this brow kit from Rimmel? or perhaps another high street brand that you think I’d like, would love to hear from you.

Get Your Look: BABYLISS PRO CERAMIC 230

I commute to work on a motorbike everyday – as good as it is to travel without being packed like a sardine on a smelly tube I always have “helmet hair” not a great look!

My hair is fine and blonde which I wear in a sleek one length precision bob with a an asymmetrical fringe.

The helmet lining creates uneven kinks and dents in my hair (even with my balaclarver) I wouldn’t mind if they looked kinda cool, but this is most definitely not the case. I look like a Bananarama throw back!!

My go to hair iron of choice is GHD and a staple in my kit, but I needed something in a lower price point to keep in my locker at work.

I got these Babyliss pro ceramic 230 irons for only £17.99 They take just 30 seconds to heat up, have two levels of heat the max is 230 degrees. Theres a red light indicator to let you know when they are ready. The cord is a swive cord 2 meters long.

I section my hair in three layers starting  from the bottom taking one sections at a time. The plates heat up quite evenly, they glide through my hair effortlessly without snagging leaving my hair smooth, shiny and kink free!

For the price point these Babyliss irons have lived up to my expectation, personally the cord could be a little longer (longer length is available on the next model up) but that aside I’m very happy with them.

If you are looking for pair of hair irons without investing too much cash then these are for you! I got mine from Argos here £17.99

Barry M BROW KIT Shape & Define

As I’ve been using Benefit brows a go go and brow zings for years let’s just say based on price point I was quite skeptical about the performance of BarryM’s brow kit.

IMG_5370.JPGNo disrespect BarryM I love lots of your reasonably priced products, however when it comes to brows I tend to think you have to spend more money to get good results…boy was I wrong!

Packaging is basic and neat, the set includes a handy mirror, mini tweezers, double ended applicator, brow wax, brow shaddow and a high lighter. What more do you need to keep your brows in check?
IMG_5369.JPGThe wax is a good colour and perfect texture for creating a good shape and tame strays.
The shaddow is a great colour match for my brows, you can build it up for a darker shade, the downside is if your brows are fair this will not be the product for you as it only comes in the one shade.
The high lighter is subtle, I’m not crazy about it but if does the job!

IMG_5373.JPGThe tweezers are great emergency on the go kind if tweezers, they work really well but simply to small to have the patients with for regular at home brow grooming.

The double ended applicator brush is brilliant! One slanted, one rounded. I use both to create a nice shape.

The mirror is just the right size, not too small making it easy to see what you are doing.

IMG_5374.JPGA swatch of the wax, shaddow and high lighter. Sorry it’s not the best of lighting in this photo.

IMG_5372-1.JPGIf you read my holiday make-up bag must haves post in July you will remember that this was included, which really put this product to the test in sweltering heat day/night plus chlorine pools and of course the salty sea water exposure while holidaying in Turkey.

IMG_5368.JPGThe verdict…you passed with flying colours, ok I did need a few touch ups in the hot sun but the staying power was impressive, it certainly didn’t slide off my face while I was sweating when sun bathing or come off in the sea or pool.

Now the biggest question is do I switch back to Benefit when this finishes or do I repurchase? At less then half the price at only £5.99 I think it’s a strong possibility.

What do you guys think?

Golden Rose Paris Nail Lacquer in Neon Pink

It’s day1 inTürkiye at “Azda”our local supermarket while loading our trolley full of wholesome foods and naughty delights I came across a bargain bucket of beauty finds near the tills. What caught my eye were little bottles of bright pops of coloured nail varnish, a brand unknown to me but looked appealing all the same.

And I’m on holiday the rules are different aren’t they?

20140723-175903-64743913.jpg(image taken when I got home)

I couldn’t resist and dropped a neon pink into my trolley knowing it will compliment my tan (once I got one which I intended on asap)

20140723-180212-64932649.jpgGolden Rose nail lacquer cost only 2 Turkish lira (about 57 pence!!!!)

It glided on smooth and even, two coats for the perfect colour. The bottle is a nice shape with the applicator easy to hold/use. The brush is slim and doesn’t overload with polish. It dried quickly with a gloss and I liked the fact it’s slightly sheer. I didn’t have a topcoat with me so am impressed with it’s staying power.

20140723-180447-65087811.jpg(image taken after 9 days wear)

Day 9 and no sign of chipping or fading and that’s with a few chores around our villa and of course days out/nights out/shopping trips and swimming in our pool plus a few long days at the beach! It’s only just started to wear off the tips.

The colour looks even better now my hands are a shade of golden brown. I think I will re-apply when I get back home as my summer hue, this time with a topcoat for extra gloss. My toes have one of my old favourites Essie’s bachelorette bash, but I’m thinking about changing them to my new love for pink neon pronto!

20140723-180908-65348793.jpgI wish I went back for more colours, there was an appealing jade green and a cool cornflower blue…oh well there’s always next time!

No7 Perfect Blend Trio Concealer 5g

Packaged in white clamshell type simple packaging it looks appealing, you don’t ask for much from the look of concealer, it’s all about performance right? My only wish would be a little mirror inside for those emergency touch ups! The shades come in a cool pinkish tone, a cool ivory tone and a warm darker tone. You can cleverly blend to create your own colours, or (as I do) I use the cool pinkish tone for spot cover up and under eyes, and the the ivory tone of the inside corners of my eyes on each side of my nose to illuminate.

20140309-184711.jpgThe texture is creamy and easy to work with, a brush woks well for small areas such as pimple/blemish cover up, larger areas like under eyes I find fingers work better. The creamy texture turns to a fine powdery finish so be careful not to create a caked up look!

The science bit:
Contains Vitamin E, Pro-Vitamin B5 and is hypo-allergenic.

At £9.50 for 3 concealers in one I think it’s great value for money and will last the distance. I’m looking forward to trying the darker shade out or perhaps mixing it in with one of the other shades when I have a hint of colour to my completion this summer! I’ve been testing this for a while and realise it’s become one if my “must haves” in my make-up bag.

Beauty on a Budget

It’s that time of year when we all over spent at Christmas and New Year and feeling the pinch awaiting the very long 5 week payday! So when my usual facial wash by Soap and Glory £9 needed replacing I thought I would choose a cheaper option!

Scouring the shelves in boots for something under a a fiver…bingo there it is and for only £3.65 150ml.

20140129-144109.jpg
NIVEA Visage Gentle Cleansing Cream Wash (from the daily essentials range)

Packaging is appealing the tube has a Matt feel and the pink shade is feminine and inviting, not medical looking like some high street brands.

It feels creamy and luxurious with tiny gentle rounded beads. The smell is what you expect from Nivea, just a really nice cream smell, if you know what I mean! It applies with ease and rinses off well, leaving your skin feeling clean yet moisturised. If you like the squeaky clean shiny face result then this is not for you!

My skin feels like I do not need to apply moisturiser and after 4 uses it’s sorted out my dry patches from winter skin.

Benefits:
It purifies and smoothes for a soft skin feeling with Almond & Calendula Oil.
Helps skin stay soft and supple all day.

Conclusion:
I will definitely recommend this product and re-purchase. It’s also going to go in my “best beauty under a fiver” edit.
